MEPs in the Civil Liberties Committee have started to look at European Commission proposals to clarify the law relating to international divorces, of which across the EU there are estimated to be 170,000. A working document on Rome III, submitted to Members of the Civil Liberties Committee by Evelyn Gebhardt in September 2007, calls for greater public awareness of the problem and said it was essential that 'our citizens can really benefit from their rights'.
