On 26 February 2025, the President of the Family Division, Sir Andrew McFarlane, published new guidance for family judges on when, how, and why to write to children in family proceedings. This article considers the thinking behind this new initiative, the tools available for judges writing to children, and why it is so important for children that they are at the heart of the work of the family court.
