A recent decision of the Supreme Court, in the case of Waller-Edwards v One Savings Bank Plc, has broadened the circumstances in which lender banks must take steps to protect potential victims of undue influence or economic abuse. The decision, which recognises that a risk of undue influence exists wherever someone is taking on a liability for the benefit of their partner, is a welcome development which may help to safeguard vulnerable people from the potentially devastating financial consequences of economic abuse.
