The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 is currently the subject of government review, with the expectation of being superseded by a new Act in 2008. Considering the fast pace of technological advances in this area, the Act has survived with its regulatory framework intact and unrevised despite the call for reform from various sources, ranging from academics, lawyers and clinical practitioners. Barrister Dawinder Birk gives an overview of the current position regarding reform.
