If ever there were a need and a time for strong leadership and everyone pulling together to rescue all elements of the family justice system (FJS) this must surely be it. A more dire set of financial and other woes which everyone faces can hardly be imagined. Matters have deteriorated critically over the last 12 months. Cafcass' figures are that, up to September 2009, referrals for public and private law children cases compared with a year ago are respectively averaging 40% and 50% higher England-wide. This cannot be allowed to continue. Action is needed to stave off a complete collapse.
