Lord Neuberger appointed Master of the Rolls

Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury has been appointed the 95th Master of the Rolls with effect from 1 October 2009, following the appointment of Lord Clarke as a Justice of the Supreme Court.

Lord Neuberger, 61, is the youngest of the 12 law lords and was appointed to the House of Lords in 2007, at only 58.

He headed a Government inquiry into on how the bar could be more diverse and his recommendations have been adopted by the Bar Council.

Lord Neuberger was educated at Westminster School and Oxford and he first worked as an investment banker at N M Rothschild & Sons before he was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1974.

The UK Supreme Court will be launched on 1 October 2009. On that date The Right Honourable Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers will become the President of the Supreme Court and the Law Lords will become Justices of the Supreme Court.
