Housing and benefit system does not support homeless working families

Date:24 JUL 2018
Third slide
The UK’s housing and benefit system ‘does not adequately support all hard-working families’ Shelter has concluded in a report on families and homelessness. The charity analysed Government data and found that over half of homeless families in England are in work. This, the charity argues, reveals a lack of support for families who are trapped in temporary accommodation despite being employed.

Shelter obtained the data through freedom of information requests, as there was a lack of official information on the types of families who are becoming homeless.

The analysis shows that over 33,000 homeless families currently in temporary accommodation are employed. In response, the charity has concluded that the current housing system is not effective.
