Guidance on equal pay

Date:5 NOV 2015

Senior Editor
The Law Society has issued a practice note on equal pay, which should be read by partners, human resources professionals and anyone involved in the management of a law firm.

Employers must pay the same to people doing work of equal value, which is broadly similar or is rated as of equivalent value. Most commonly this relates to gender, but it also relates to other groups protected under the law, such as employees from different ethnic groups and disabled staff.

The guidance refers particularly to gender pay gaps and:
  • covers the law underpinning the right to equal pay;
  • offers advice on the duty of employers; and
  • suggests steps firms should take to address equal pay.
