Francesca Massarella, Barrister, Spire Barristers

In this article, Francesca Massarella explores how an effective co-working policy between adult mental health services and children’s social care can create more positive outcomes for families experiencing social care intervention in their lives due to poor mental health. This article outlines the key issues caused by a lack of communication between these two vital arms of the public sector at each stage of social care intervention and the impact that this can have on the ability for children to be kept safe and within their families. It also considers the potential solutions to this problem that could be implemented swiftly, and with minimal cost. Finally, the article considers whether it may be appropriate for there to be a statutory requirement for a co-working policy to be in place for all NHS Trusts and Children’s Social Care throughout England and Wales.
