Drawing upon the passage of the Civil Partnerships Act 2004 in the UK and examples from Canadian jurisprudence, this article discusses how attempts to displace the centrality of the 'conjugal family' in legal policy tend to emerge at crucial points in the evolution of the relational status of same-sex couples.
