With care proceedings delays reaching critical levels and over 47,000 cases backlogged, the DFJ Trailblazer pilot marked a pivotal moment in national family justice reform. This article examines how five Designated Family Judge areas - Central London, Cheshire & Merseyside, Essex & Suffolk, Guildford, and Wolverhampton - piloted locally tailored interventions to reduce delays, improve outcomes, and strengthen system efficiency.

Despite challenges such as fragmented governance and under-resourced Local Family Justice Boards, the pilot demonstrated that local innovation and collaboration can drive meaningful national reform, providing a blueprint that shows that even small, coordinated actions can lead to significant improvements in family justice.
