Date:12 DEC 2005

This article focuses on the new developments in western Europe with regards to the rights and duties of former parents in the scope of human rights, such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989, the European Conventions and the new White Paper (European Parliament). The question whether a step-parent has the right to fully take over the parental role putting aside the former father or mother of the child, by, for example (step-parent) adoption is considered.
