Attachment in the family court: is your client attaching to you?

Date:29 MAY 2007

Dr George Hibbert, MA, MBBS, MRSCPsych, DM, Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Lecturer. The characteristic way we relate to other people, especially when under stress, is known as our attachment behaviour. Most parents who are involved in family proceedings have severely dysfunctional attachment styles and this can be a major obstacle in the lawyer client relationship in family proceedings. In this article the author identifies the two particular attachment styles commonly occurring among family lawyers' clients and looks at how these styles manifest themselves and the difficulties for the lawyer attempting to deal with these demanding behaviours in the complex and difficult context of the family court.
