A day in the life of ... Elizabeth Simos

Date:26 APR 2019

What is your position and what do you do on a day-to-day basis?

I’m an Associate Solicitor based in a specialist family law practice in central London. I advise on a wide range of family law matters. I specialise in divorce, complex high value finance cases (often involving commercial and international elements) and in disputes involving children.

How long have you been in this role and what brought you here?

I’ve been a qualified solicitor for four years. I was drawn to family law because the work has the potential to have a direct, tangible and positive impact on people’s day to day lives. I was fortunate to start my training contract on completing my legal studies and have happily specialised in family law since qualifying.

Any memorable stories from your career so far?

Most relate to the numerous acts of kindness I’ve witnessed from individuals who volunteer for legal charities and who work pro bono for vulnerable clients. They do incredible work.

What is the best and worst part of the day for you?

The worst part is facing obstacles in progressing a client’s case. The best part is successfully navigating those obstacles, achieving a breakthrough anyway, and feeling like I’ve made a positive difference.

What keeps you motivated?

Securing an excellent result for a client. It is a privilege to be entrusted with a client’s case, and one which I am always striving to be equal to.

Tea or coffee?

What would you say to anyone thinking of a career in your field?

Consider all options, research them carefully and make an informed, personal decision.

What song do you listen to the most?

‘Respect’ by Aretha Franklin. It’s a great song.

Who inspires you within the world of family law?

So many! In the wider sense, Lady Hale. She’s made history with her remarkable career, she’s pioneered law reform, and champions diversity in law. During my first steps into family law I was trained by the brilliant Liz Francis whose intellect, commitment and integrity remain a source of inspiration to date. Day to day, I’m inspired by the dedicated and talented team at Ketley Miller Joels, led by the superb Clayton Miller, who instils an ethos of excellence in all that we do.

How do you enjoy your time outside of work?

Travel, sports, music, theatre - all in the company of my family and friends.

What book would you recommend to others?

Homer’s ‘Odyssey’. It’s an epic tale of perseverance, loyalty and moral endurance in the face of adversity.

What would be your alternate career?

Medicine perhaps, but I’ll stick with law.

If you could change one thing about the family justice system what would it be and why?

I would ensure everyone had equal access to legal advice and representation. It is the vital component of a fair, functional and effective justice system.

What has winning the Award of Family Law Young Solicitor of the Year 2018 meant to you?

There are so many talented, committed and hardworking young family lawyers in England and Wales deserving of recognition, so I was delighted even to be considered. To have won the award is an immense privilege, which I am very grateful for.
