The President's Resolution Address 2012

Date:18 JUN 2012

Sir Nicholas Wall
President of the Family Division

This is the full text of Sir Nicholas Wall, President of the Family Division's keynote address to the Resolution conference in Leeds in March 2012. On divorce reform he states: 'My position is very simple. I am a strong believer in marriage. But I see no good arguments against no fault divorce.' He goes on to say, 'In the nineteenth century and for much of the twentieth, divorce was a matter of social status - it mattered whether you were divorced or not, and if you were, it was important to demonstrate that you were the "innocent" party. All that, I think, has gone.' The President also deals with:

  • Legal aid
  • Litigants in person
  • Legal advice
  • Domestic abuse
  • Self representing litigants
  • Care proceedings, and
  • Ancillary relief
