New Elder Law Journal launched

Jordan Publishing is pleased to announce the launch of the Elder Law Journal. The quarterly journal is being published in association with Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE).

Written for private client lawyers, the journal is dedicated to providing in-depth analysis and debate, as well as timely and practical information on the comprehensive range of legal and related issues affecting older people, their families and carers.

The journal is being launched in recognition of the increasing number of legal practitioners and professional advisers who are developing a specialist practice area in advising older clients. The Elder Law Journal will be of benefit to those specialist practitioners, aiming to provide them with the knowledge, skills and expertise to help deliver high quality legal services - both to those who wish to plan ahead for their old age, and also to vulnerable older people and their families who run into problems in dealing with their financial affairs or in accessing appropriate care and support.

Like its sister publication Family Law, each issue of the journal will start with a Comment piece, giving the opportunity for leading experts to express their personal views on a topical issue of their choosing. The Newsline section provides a summary of key news items and important developments in law, practice and policy. There will be a range of in-depth Articles, covering the full spectrum of legal issues affecting older clients, written by leading practitioners, academics and other experts. In Practice focuses on shorter practice notes and articles addressing problems experienced in practice, sometimes picking up on recurring questions and themes raised in the SFE email forum. The regular SFE News column reports on the important work SFE is doing on behalf of its members, as well as organisational news and dates for your diary.

With the increasing number of litigated cases, both in the Court of Protection and in other jurisdictions impacting on the welfare and financial affairs of older people, the Case Reports are written with the specialist elder law practitioner in mind. The journal aims to select recent important cases of particular relevance to the law affecting older people - while some of these cases may have been reported elsewhere, the specialist analysis and commentary seek to focus on what practitioners in the field need to know.

The journal's Editor is Penny Letts OBE, a Policy Consultant and Trainer specialising in mental health, mental capacity and disability law. She is a member of the Administrative Justice and Tribunals Council and was a Member of the Mental Health Act Commission (1995-2004) and a Policy Advisor for the Law Society (1987-2001).

The editorial team of the Elder Law Journal would welcome your views and comments, both on the subject matters covered, as well as any  suggestions, requests and contributions to future issues of the journal.
