Called to the Bar Inner Temple in 1967 and practised on the Western Circuit. He became a recorder of the Crown Court and took silk in 1987 and became a judge of the High Court of Justice in 1993. He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2005 and to the Supreme Court in 2011.
