Wife who rejected Jewish lifestyle wins fight over home

Date:27 NOV 2018

Miriam Kliers, an ultra-orthodox Jewish woman who was ostracised from the community after leaving her husband, has won a court battle to keep the 75% stake in the property she jointly held with her ex-husband.

Shlomo Kliers has filed for divorce from estranged wife Miriam Kliers, 46, after she left him in 2012, abandoning their traditional lifestyle for a new non-orthodox partner.

Commenting on the High Court ruling, Deborah Levy, a family law consultant at Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth, told Family Law that "unfortunately, disputes in the name of religion remain rife, whether it is Judaism, Christianity, Sharia Lawor any other religion."

Levy added that Miriam Kliers was entitled "not only to her freedom, but to a fair share of the matrimonial assets regardless of whether she abandoned or adhered to her faith."
