Shared parenting upon parental relationship breakdown is reflected in law in the concept of (ongoing) parental responsibility and in orders or agreements which specify the period(s) that a child will spend with each parent. In appropriate circumstances (and that is an essential qualification) shared parenting might particularly be facilitated by a shared residence order (SRO), as permitted by s 11(4) of the Children Act 1989 (CA 1989). This specifies periods during which the child is to live in the parents' respective households, allowing appropriate time and setting for each parent's significant positive involvement in the child's life.
