The Department of Health has launched a 12-week consultation on a revision of the UK Health Departments Code of Practice and Guidance on Genetic Paternity Testing Services (March 2001), which is being amended to reflect changes in the law since 2001.

The Department is seeking views from major stakeholders in this area for their views on the following three questions:

  • does the revised guidance adequately address the changes in UK law since publication of the Code in 2001?;
  • will the arrangement, whereby UK Health Departments issue voluntary guidance on paternity testing services, be sufficient in ensuring the continued application of good practice in the future?;
  • if not, what other measures or arrangements do you believe should be put in place to help maintain good practice across the board?.

The consultation will run from 4 February to 5 May 2008.
