Family judges call for more funding in Australia

Date:31 OCT 2018

Senior judges in Australia have criticized the country's government for what they call a severe lack of funding of family courts.

According to the magistrates, both current and former judges, families suffer as a result of underfunded institutions, leading to delays in proceedings and unnecessary costs, Australian broadcaster ABC reports.

One unnamed, former judge the current family court system "did not have enough money to get resources, such as family reports and access to family consultants, and I think it's still the same today."

He stated that family courts in Australia should be better funded, but political considerations have held back additional funds in recent years.

"There are not too many votes in courts, and other things are seen by governments as more attractive places to put public money," the former magistrate explained.
