Hackey families turn to high court to halt special needs spending cuts

A group of families are taking Hackney council to the High Court over cuts to special educational needs spending, saying that their children failing to get the support they need.

The case against the London borough of Hackney is the latest in a series of legal actions launched by parents across England as local authorities have looked to special needs spending in order to make savings.

The Hackney parents question the legality of the council’s policy of splitting SEN funding into five bands, rather than tailoring spending to meet the needs of each individual child.

As the two-day hearing started yesterday, a crowdfunding campaign was launched in Portsmouth to raise sufficient funds to legally challenge proposed cuts to SEN spending in that council.
