Leading international family law firm sets up Brexit family law helpdesk

Date:27 JUN 2016
Third slide

The International Family Law Group LLP (iFLG) have today launched a free Brexit family law helpdesk to provide information for family lawyers here and abroad and those involved in family court proceedings about the impact of Brexit on family law.

Since March 2001, the EU has passed several major laws concerning family law in England and Wales. They have automatically become law and not passed through the UK Parliament. Although most apply to international families and cross-border disputes, some relate to entirely domestic law and national families.

Over the next 2 years before the formal UK exit, there will be urgent consideration to what will happen when these EU laws no longer exist. What new laws will be needed? What laws similar to EU laws should still exist? What other international treaties provide similar and satisfactory laws? Domestic legislation will undoubtedly be needed. In the meantime, what will happen to present laws and present proceedings?

iFLG is one of the world’s leading family law firms serving the interests of international families and their children. It works significantly with EU laws and has been involved in reforms of EU laws. It has often provided information on major international family law developments.

Many family lawyers in England and Wales, and those abroad acting for international families, have uncertainties about the impact of Brexit, both now and over the next 2 years. iFLG received a number of enquiries on Friday.

Therefore to assist family law professionals here and abroad and any involved in family court proceedings, iFLG has set up a Brexit family law helpdesk. This is a free service, providing information presently available on what is happening. It can be contacted at enquiries@iflg.uk.com or on +44 (0) 203 178 5668.

iFLG has already written articles on the impact of Brexit for both international families and national families at http://www.familylaw.co.uk/news_and_comment/brexit-and-international-family-law and http://www.iflg.uk.com/blog/brexit-and-national-family-law.  These will be kept updated as information becomes available over the coming days and weeks.
