Men Increasingly at Risk of Domestic Violence

Date:20 MAY 2013

According to the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV), an increasing number of men are suffering from domestic violence. Research has revealed that every third victim of domestic violence is male, and one in six men will experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime. It has also been reported that one man dies every 3 weeks as a result of domestic violence and 9% of all reported violent crimes are domestic violence cases involving male victims; due to factors such as shame and embarrassment, most will not seek help.

Associate Director Libby Daultrey, at Marsden Rawsthorn Solicitors, is not surprised by these statistics, and cites female alcohol abuse as a key factor. She says that, ‘It is not uncommon to hear of women suffering from domestic violence in the mainstream media, but male domestic violence is perhaps a more troubling area as men are less likely to seek help from the police, solicitors or healthcare professionals.'

The NVDC urges anyone who is in an abusive relationship to seek help now to get the security and freedom that they deserve. Victims can contact the charity by calling 0844 8044 999 or by texting ‘NCDV' to 60777.
